Christmas Arriving Early In New Orleans For One Lucky Family
LEED® Platinum-Level Concept Home Constructed with Roseburg FSC®-Certified Wood Framing and Other Environmentally Certified Building Products
A demonstration home built with wood framing materials supplied by Roseburg, an Oregon-based forest products company, and certified by SCS Global Services to meet Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) standards, will soon be occupied by a family in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward, thanks to an innovative collaboration between LivingHomes and the Make It Right foundation.
The 1,450 square foot, three-bedroom, two-bath modular home, recently showcased at the US Green Building Council’s GreenBuild 2014 Conference in New Orleans, has been moved to its permanent site, and is nearly ready for occupancy. It meets LEED® Platinum Level standards, and features a wide range of design elements and products intended to minimize impacts on the environment and the homeowner’s pocketbook.
“Roseburg was honored to be selected to supply materials to this exciting project,” said Rick Troxel, Roseburg Marketing Manager. “Not only will the homeowners be able to take advantage of the substantial energy savings inherent in the home’s design, but they will also have the satisfaction of knowing that the wood used in the construction of their home came from certified, responsibly managed forests.”
Roseburg provided three of its 30 FSC-certified products to the project — RigidLam® LVL for headers, columns, and beams; structural lumber of various sizes and dimensions; and plywood sheathing for framing and siding. FSC certification is the international benchmark of responsible forestry management, and helps building projects earn LEED v4 credits. All of Roseburg’s FSC certifications were earned as a result of independent assessments conducted by SCS Global Services, the leading FSC certifier in the U.S.
“The use of Roseburg’s FSC-certified wood products reaffirms the growing importance of using responsibly sourced wood used in residential construction,” said Robert J. Hrubes, SCS Executive Vice President. “It is more vital than ever that we provide proper stewardship for this precious resource.”
The first-of-a-kind show home was built by LivingHomes, an innovative developer aligned with leading architects to create homes that combine modern form and functionality with healthy and sustainable building materials and energy systems. LivingHome collaborated with Make It Right, a non-profit specializing in the construction of affordable, high-performance houses for communities in need across the country, to ensure that the demonstration home could meet the demands of the New Orleans’ hot and humid climate. The home will be acquired by a low-income family participating in Make It Right’s home buying program.
Among the LEED v4 Platinum, Energy Star v3, and Cradle to Cradle certified products included in the project were additional items certified for one or more attributes by SCS Global Services as well as the Roseburg products. These include Andersen 100 Series awning window frame and patio doors, certified for their recycled content as well as for meeting stringent indoor air quality standards under the SCS Indoor Advantage Gold program, and Jeld-Wen Molded Wood Composite Interior doors, certified for their recycled content.
